Christmas Holiday Leave – Let your nanny go for Christmas holidays or not.

You are approaching that joyful time of the year that is dreaded in many of our homes and brings the big question whether to let your nanny go for Christmas holidays or not.

What if she is not back after January 1st and you need to go back to work? Who do you leave your children with?

Your nanny is an integral part of your home and as much as we consider her a family member, you must remember she is an employee with rights and benefits that are due to her.

It is obvious that she is entitled to leave, not just the 1 or 2 weeks that we think are enough over the Christmas holidays rather she is entitled to 21 days leave in every year. If you are unable to make do without the services of your nanny because you love her, this has to be compensated by paying her for her annual leave not taken.

We are also notorious for thinking that because our nanny lives with us she does not deserve a rest day like you do in your office job. You need to discuss with your nanny which day is most appropriate for her rest day in every 7 days.

This Christmas Holidays before releasing your employee, it is important to have a conversation on whether they are coming back at the beginning of the year or they intend to resign by refusing to come back and not pick your calls.

Actually, this is a conversation that all of us need to have at the beginning of employment where you would require your nanny to give notice to terminate their services.

This will enable you to successfully plan for the eventuality that your nanny will not return.

In the unfortunate event that you nanny refuses to pick up your calls come January and refuses to return, this will be a gross misconduct which can form a basis for termination of employment.
